Prelim Evaluation Questions
1) Who did you work with and how did you manage the task between you?
I was in a group with Jess and Sam, we worked well as a team by listening and helping developing each others ideas. Once we were given our genre which was family, we all began brainstorming ideas and listing films that could help influence ours. Between us we came up with the idea of a film based upon a boy that has superpowers as we could aim this towards a family audience. We as group were all good at communicating and putting forward our ideas and opinions, we made sure we all played an equal part in the task and were all contributing. We used certain members in the group to do certain things which would help with the task, for example Jess has very good editing skills she was mainly in charge of the editing on Premier, whilst me and Sam planned our film opening ideas by using a story board, shooting schedule, script and production diary.
2) How did you plan your sequence? What processes did you use?
To plan our sequence we used a story board, we drew images of the specific scenes in order with a description of location and what was happening in the scene, We also used a shooting schedule which we could refer to whilst we was filming, this enabled us to see what we were filming on specific days and what shots they were e.g close up, panning, landscape. For this task we were given a list of shots to include so it was important we made a note of this therefore we could keep check of what shots we had and hadn't included.
3) What theorists do you think you could apply to your task?
I think Aristotle's theory of having a beginning, middle and end could apply to our prelim as our film opening sequence did have a beginning scene and a middle however it didn't quite have an end as we left it on a cliff hanger to keep the audience hooked and wanting to watch more to find out what happens. We also included some stages of Todorov's theory of the 5 stages such as the state of normality(Equilibrium) -( when Sam is just a boy at school in his normal daily life). The distrubtion of the equilibrium-( when Sam suddenly develops the power of super strength after being bullied and tormented by another character).
4) What factors did you have to take into account when planning, shooting and editing?
When planning to shot we had to take the weather and location into account as well as timings. For example if we knew that a piece of filming would take more time to shot then we made sure we gave it priority by taking more time out to film.Especially if we needed it to look like it had been filmed on the same day. For example one of our scenes was filmed in a graveyard therefore we had to take into consideration the time it would take to get to the location as well as filming that specific scene. When editing, we had to take into account that some clips needed music in the background and more editing than others therefore we had to be flexible with the amount of time we spent editing certain scenes.
5) How successful was your sequence? Please identify what worked well and with hindsight what would you improve/do differently?
Overall i think our sequence was successful bearing in mind the week deadline we were given to film and edit. I also think the filming went very well as we included all the shots we were suppose to, and included a panning shot which was filmed in two parts where one second the room was as normal and then when the camera panned back around there was a pile of chairs scattered against the wall portraying the effects of Sam's powers he had possessed. Looking back on our prelim to improve i think we could have planned our script in more detail so we would have had more dialogue in the sequence giving it a clearer scence of direction and what is happening, to the audience.
6) What did others say about your production?
The general feedback we received was good, people were impressed by the shots we had included and the way we used school locations to make it look like a home. They also liked the storyline and saw how this idea was aimed at our specific target audience. Some tips of improvement was to add more dialogue.
7) What have you learnt from completing this task?
I have learnt how to work well within a group and to make sure that everyone has an equal part in the task, I have also learnt about new camera shots, for example the 'over the shoulder' shots when filming a conversation. As well as this I have also improved on the editing programme premier and learnt editing skills like how to add background music and text.
8) Looking ahead, how will this learning be significant when completing your final film opening?
This prelim task will be very useful and significant when it comes to the final film opening task, this is because i can look back through the planning, filming and editing of this task and see where errors occurred and see were improvements made.Through this process i have learnt that it is the smallest improvements and editing skills that can make a huge beneficial impact on the final outcome. The new skills and mistakes i have made in the task will be significant when it comes to the final task.
